Common Mergansers on Chickadee Lake

At this time of year, Common Mergansers gather on Chickadee Lake in the evening to sleep and disperse to the ocean shorelines during the morning. Quite a spactacle!

Orca pod in Baynes Sound

A pod of Orcas swam north up the Baynes Sound yesterday morning. These shots were taken from the 8:40 ferry from Denman to Buckley Bay. There are more Orca shots at http://denmanconservancy.blogspot.com/

Beaver caught in broad daylight!

A pair of lively beavers was seen in Railway Marsh this week in broad daylight. Lets hope they stay so that I can learn a little about dam construction.

Railway Marsh Trumpeter Swans

This fine pair of Trumpeter Swans was seen on Railway Marsh this Tuesday during the weekly swan count. About 15-20 swans are wintering on Denman before flying back to their breeding grounds in the Yukon and Alaska.

Bald Eagle Feast

As the snow melted, the bodies of two young deer emerged behind my garage. They had apparently starved during the prolonged snowy spell in December and early January. I moved these bodies into the open so that the eagles could have ready access and I could get some photographs. It was 5 days before the eagles started to eat this feast.

I went down to the Gladstone Road beach on Friday to watch yet another super sunset. It foretells continuing good weather.

Pileated Woodpecker on 'crazy' snag. Dead trees sustain woodpeckers! They should be left standing in their full glory as they support a network of organisms!

Today was a beautiful (but very cold), sunny day. I walked around 5 miles to Pickles Marsh and back. Saw a troop of 12 kinglets feeding (on what?) in the road in Winter Wren Wood. This photo is of Chickadee Marsh from Lake Road.
